Hey Y’all! Come on in!

Hailing from the heart and soul of the Mississippi Delta, I am Laura K. Cooper—an attorney, storyteller, and creator in Mississippi. I am the proud daughter of my parents, a sister, niece, aunt, cousin, friend, girlfriend, and bonus mom.

I founded Ask A Lawyer K, LLC to demystify the law for everyday people. I pray that my works will embolden citizens with knowledge they can shape into power to overcome oppressive systems and improve the quality of their lives.

A law can enslave or emancipate. Lawyers can gatekeep or empower. There was a time when I wasn’t a lawyer but wanted to, no—needed to know how laws affected me and my family. I was the kind of child who wanted to know how to change the laws I thought was unfair or just stupid. I created this platform for people who want to understand the law without feeling intimidated, talked down to, or shut out. Around here, the law isn’t treated like a secret language—it’s a tool. And tools are meant to be used.

You’ll notice a page on this site called Open Your Briefcase. That page reminds you that you have tools in your briefcase that you were born with and tools you can learn from me and my associates. You’ll find a collection of tangible resources—educational “XL Challenges”, directories, Christian stories, coloring pages, and more tools designed to help you take your next step with clarity and confidence.

Let me pause to tell you that I am not your lawyer. I say that with kindness and with the utmost respect to you and to my licensing authority. This website does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Your use of this website does not create an attorney-client relationship with me. What I do offer is context, education, and insight—so you can (1) recognize when you need legal help; (2) know how to find the right lawyer when the time comes; and (3) ask that lawyer better questions.

I am always brainstorming and producing new content, so you should always come back to see what more we have to offer.

I am a criminal trial attorney with extensive courtroom experience in both prosecution and defense. Because of this, I have a unique, dual-perspective to case evaluation—having built cases, defended cases, tried cases, and trained witnesses from both sides of the courtroom. Similarly, I came from humble beginnings and became the first lawyer in my family. So, I have the unique experience of using educational opportunities to escape poverty. When I think about Ask A Lawyer K, LLC, it’s like I’m doing the same thing here. These lessons, these resources, this bridge to knowledge exists to help people escape oppressive systems. I am honing my skills as a fierce and relatable advocate to break down barriers to justice. If you are as curious about the law and about God as I am, then this is a place for you.

In high school, I was known for protesting injustices. I guess I have tended to stand up for others, even when I wasn’t as confident about standing up for myself at times. I’ve known since then I wanted to be a lawyer, and it truly is an honor to be one today. Someone once said, “Those who have the privilege to know, have a duty to act.” I believe this means that I must use my knowledge and access to resources to help those who don’t know.

During my collegiate summers, I returned home to teach and later direct Delta Foundation’s SMILE Summer Enrichment School for inner-city youth. That is when someone finally articulated the value of having fun while learning. I adopted that model and infused it into my company, too. Today, I am in the third year of coaching a high school mock trial team, and I serve on the Professionalism Committee for The MS Bar Association. I served on the Access to Justice Committee for The MS Bar and was President of the Washington County Bar Association. I have served on several committees for the Magnolia Bar Association as well. I am a 2024 Graduate of the Leadership Bar Program and 2019 Graduate of the Mississippi Black Leadership Institute. All of my community work has sharpened my ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and engage effectively with people across backgrounds. As Sarah Jakes Roberts once reminded me, “I am the woman for the job.”
