Find a Lawyer in Your State.

A good lawyer should not be hard to find.

Before I became a lawyer, I didn’t realize that every licensed attorney belongs to a state bar association. Bar associations are official organizations that regulate who can practice law, establish ethical rules, and maintain public records of licensed attorneys in each state.

In Mississippi, for example, once you pass the bar exam, you must become a member of the Mississippi Bar in order to practice law here. If a lawyer is barred in another state and wants to take cases in Mississisppi, they have to come through the Mississippi Bar, too. One of the most valuable resources the Mississippi Bar provides to non-lawyers is its online attorney directory. A bar directory functions much like an online phone book for lawyers—it allows the public to search for licensed attorneys by name, location, or practice area.

Recently, the Mississippi Bar upgraded its directory to make it even more user-friendly. It now includes attorney photographs, contact information, office locations, and practice areas, making it easier for the public to verify credentials and connect with legal representation.

Every state has its own bar association, and most provide a public attorney directory similar to Mississippi’s. After reviewing bar association websites across the country, I found that each state recognizes the importance of helping its residents locate qualified legal counsel. As a result, these attorney directories are generally available online and open to the public. Don’t take my word for it. You have the same access to these websites as I did when I searched. No codeword needed!

To make your search easier, I’ve copied and pasted each state’s lawyer search tool or directory below. My “directory of directories” allows you to quickly find the official attorney-lookup resource for your state and begin your search for the legal help you need.

Please note:

The information on this website is provided for general informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Viewing or using this directory does not create an attorney-client relationship. Legal outcomes depend on the specific facts of each case and the laws of the applicable jurisdiction. Each website is subject to change. Search (your state + bar association) if the link below for your state becomes unavailable.
